fries, strega nona, and the little prince

so last night. i finally got to see greg after like four days. heh. i know. i'm so lame.

anyway! after dinnah we went for a walk and then i had the brilliant idea to go read children's books outloud to each other at barnes and noble. (insert *aww*) haha. no, not to be sappy-- i just wanted to see his taste in children's books.

so we went for strega nona and when i saw the little prince (which greg asked about because my sister has a lot of laminated post cards of the little prince), well, it was a pretty obvious decision.

so strega nona was short and cute, but overall, pretty meaningless. i remember loving the book-- in what?-- 2nd grade! ah yes, the second grade class even did a video report on it. i had to play some towns person and because she was cuter (seriously she was the mean girl queen even in second grade) Pearl* got to be the reporter and she chose the questions to ask me. but man, were her questions boring! i got so bored. pearl got all this air talking time asking me long winded questions, but they were all yes or no... but the answer to ALL of them-- was no. so you can imagine this ..

Pearl: blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
me: no.
pearl: blah blah blah blabity blah blah blah?
me: no. *starts fidgeting*

and so on. so naturally, i started getting really bored and uninterested in my position. so i considered her next question very seriously. "did you ever touch the pasta pot that strega nona had?" and i decided that i was a very adventurous curious townsperson. and i answered "yes."

man. did pearl ever get more confused/angry. lol. dude i would so go back in time and give myself kudos for throwing everyone off. haha. i remember being sad that everyone was so angry with me. but hey. i did something different, and i sure as heck wasn't goinna listen to what pearl was goinna tell me.

anyway. back to my pseudo date with greg, we read the little prince together too. at first i tried reading it outloud but it's a pretty wordy book, so we opted for fighting over turning the page faster.

here: have a picture

i remember when i tried reading the book as an 8 year old, when my sisters were 12 and 16 and were in love with the book, i didn't like it. at all. it made me sad, and i was confused about what had happened to the little prince. i tried getting my sister to explain it to me, but i don't think they really understood what was going on either. heh.

anyway. if you haven't read the book, you should really go try it.

“Goodbye,” said the fox. “Here is my secret. It’s quite simple: One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes. . . . It’s the time that you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important. . . . People have forgotten this truth,” the fox said, “But you mustn’t forget it. You become responsible for what you’ve tamed. You’re responsible for your rose. . . .”

the fox also refers to being tamed, as creating bridges and connections with people. and i couldn't help but laugh at how much the relationship of the little prince and his little flower seemed so much like that of an insecure girl and her boyfriend trying to fend to her every need. anyway, it was nice that he learned that he loved his flower, despite everything, and that his flower had tamed him, and he had learned to tame others. isn't that the basic goal of everyone in this world? to love someone?and have someone love you back? seems that way to me...

anyway. frank sinatra says it best.

in other words, please be true.
in other words, i love you!

happy 1yr and 10 mo.

* name has been changed for protection of the writer. i don't want hypnotized korean mobsters after my friends and family. :P but the hint would be her name is in the same category as her alias.
